🏛️ Local Laws & Etiquette

Whether you're staying in Palma or exploring the island’s rustic villages, Mallorca is a pet-friendly destination as long as you follow the rules. Here’s what you need to know before traveling with your dog:

  • Leash law: Dogs must be on a leash in public at all times, including parks and city streets.

  • Muzzle requirement: Mandatory for dogs classified as Perros Potencialmente Peligrosos (PPP). These breeds must also be leashed (max 2m), muzzled, and licensed.

  • Clean-up: Owners must carry bags and clean up waste. Fines for non-compliance are common, especially in Palma.

  • No dogs on children’s playgrounds, sports fields, or school zones.

  • Dogs are not allowed to run freely in public or natural protected areas.

🚫 Offenses & Penalties

  • Not picking up dog waste: €150 to €300

  • Walking a dog without a leash in public: €100 to €250

  • Having a PPP (dangerous breed) off-leash or unmuzzled: €300 to €2,400

  • Not carrying waste bags while walking a dog: €75 to €200

  • Allowing a dog to access prohibited areas (playgrounds, beaches in summer, etc.): €100 to €300

  • Excessive barking causing noise complaints: €150 to €750

  • No valid pet ID or microchip: €300 to €2,400

  • Letting a dog roam freely (unsupervised): €300 to €1,500

  • PPP dogs (Perros Potencialmente Peligrosos) must be registered, licensed, insured, muzzled, and on a short leash (<2m) at all times in public. Failure to comply is one of the most heavily fined offenses

  • Enforcement is stricter in Palma, Calvià, and tourist-heavy areas

  • Spot checks are common in parks and on promenades, especially during high season

🚗  Getting There & Around

  • By Plane: Air Europa allows dogs in the cabin up to 8 kg (10 kg including carrier). Dogs must be approved in advance, and a fee applies (~€25 in 2018, €35 in 2023).

  • By Ferry: Baleària offers pet-friendly cabins, common areas, dog rest zones, and amenities like water bowls on board.

  • City Buses (EMT): Since 2022, all dogs (except banned breeds) can ride. Dogs in carriers go free; without a carrier, the fare is €0.30. Dogs must wear a muzzle and be leashed.

  • Train & Metro (SFM): As of April 2024, dogs are allowed in the last carriage. Free in a carrier; otherwise, they require a human fare. Dogs must be leashed (≤0.5 m), muzzled, or in a basket. No females in heat or banned breeds allowed.

🏖️ Dog-Friendly Beaches

  • Playa de Llenaire (Port de Pollença): Playa de Llenaire is known to be dog-friendly, particularly a designated area near the port of Pollença towards Alcúdia. This area of the beach is marked with signs indicating its pet-friendly status and the rules to be followed. The beach features a mix of pebbles and some sandy areas, with pine trees offering shade, making it a pleasant spot to relax with your dog.

  • Cala Blanca (Andratx): It's one of three beaches in Andratx that are now designated for dogs and their owners. The beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and is located between Camp de Mar and Cala Llamp.

  • Playa de Es Carnatge (Palma): Es Carnatge Beach is located in the municipality of Can Pastilla on the island of Mallorca. This white sand beach is dog-friendly. Benches have been made available for beach users.

  • Na Patana (C’an Picafort): Na Patana, also known as Punta de Na Patana, is located on a beautiful, unspoiled coastal section between the Punta des Fenicis and the S'Arenal of the Casat beach, overlooking the majestic bay of Alcúdia. 🏛️ Local Laws & Etiquette

Menorca is a laid-back and nature-rich island, but traveling with a dog still requires respect for local laws and unwritten social rules. Menorca is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so many protected areas restrict dogs to specific zones or times. Here's everything pet owners need to know.

  • All dogs must be kept on a leash in public areas (towns, streets, promenades, hiking trails).

  • Your dog must wear an identification tag with your contact information.

  • Microchip: Legally required for all dogs, including visitors.

  • Rabies Vaccination: Mandatory and must be recorded in an EU Pet Passport (or equivalent for non-EU travelers).

  • Waste Bags: You must carry dog waste bags and use them. Not doing so can result in fines.

  •  Dangerous Breeds (PPP - Perros Potencialmente Peligrosos). If your dog is a breed classified as potentially dangerous:

    • Must be muzzled and on a short, non-extendable leash (max 2m) in public.

    • Owners must carry a special license and civil liability insurance.

    • PPP dogs cannot be walked by minors (under 18).

    • Always carry your documentation when out with a PPP dog — police checks happen.

  • Dogs are not allowed in children’s playgrounds, sports facilities, or marked nature protection zones.

  • From May to October, most public beaches do not allow dogs during the day (especially Blue Flag beaches).

🚗 Getting There & Around

  • Car Hire: Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Menorca with your dog. Most rental companies allow pets, but:

    • Check individual policies

    • Use a pet seatbelt or crate

    • Return the car clean to avoid extra fees

    • Choose cars with air conditioning; Menorca summers can be hot for dogs.

  • Taxis:

    • Some local taxis allow dogs, especially small ones or with carriers

    • Always call ahead to confirm

    • A muzzle and leash may be requested for larger dogs.

  • Buses:

    • Public buses (TMSA) on Menorca do not generally allow dogs, except small ones in carriers

  • Camí de Cavalls (Full island route): The Cami de Cavalls, a trail circling Menorca, can be enjoyed with dogs, but with certain considerations. Dogs are permitted on most sections of the trail, provided they are kept on a leash. However, some areas, particularly within the Albufera des Grau natural park and some beaches, have restrictions or prohibitions due to environmental protection. It's advisable to check specific regulations for each section and to carry water and be mindful of the heat, especially during summer months. ​Key Considerations for Walking the Cami de Cavalls with Dogs:

    • Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times on the Cami de Cavalls. 

    • Some areas, like the Albufera des Grau, have restrictions or prohibitions for dogs. 

    • Dogs may be restricted or prohibited on certain beaches, especially during the bathing season. Check local regulations for specific beaches. 

    • Be mindful of the heat, particularly during summer, and ensure your dog has enough water and breaks.

  • Castillo de Santa Águeda vía Cami de Tramuntana: Get to know this 3.2-km loop trail near Ferreries. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 10 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking, mountain biking, and running, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

📍Es Broll de Buscastell: a tranquil agricultural valley located in the heart of Ibiza's rural landscape, near the village of Buscastell in the municipality of Sant Antoni de Portmany. This serene area is renowned for its traditional irrigation system, which dates back to the Arab period, and offers visitors a glimpse into the island's agricultural heritage.

📍Cala d’Hort to Es Vedrà Trail: stunning views of Es Vedrà rock island, pine forests, Mediterranean scrub, and secluded coves. Good path for dogs that can handle moderate terrain. Keep dogs on leash near cliffs.

🏛️ Local Laws & Etiquette

  • Entry & Identification: Pets must be microchipped, have a valid EU Pet Passport, and be up-to-date on rabies vaccination. Dangerous breeds require certificates.

  • Leash & Muzzle: Dogs must be leashed in public. Potentially Dangerous Pups (PPP) must wear a muzzle and have a short leash.

  • No Access Indoors or Public Transport: Except for guide dogs, pets cannot enter indoor bars, restaurants, shops, beaches, or public transport. 

  • Summer Beach Ban (May 1–Oct 30, 09:00–21:00):  Dogs are strictly prohibited during these hours on all beaches—including beaches in nature reserves and Blue Flag areas. 

  • Allowed Off-Peak: Outside beach season or early/late parts of the day, these zones are open to dogs, but only if leashed and cleaned up after. 

  • Protected Areas: Many beaches fall within the Parc Natural de Ses Salines, where dog restrictions are even more enforced here.
