🏛️ Local Laws & Pet Etiquette
Travelling with your dog means not only enjoying the sights and sounds but also respecting local rules and customs to ensure a smooth and pleasant experience for everyone. Barcelona has specific laws designed to keep pets, people, and public spaces safe and enjoyable. This section outlines key regulations and shares tips on local pet etiquette, helping you navigate the city responsibly and with respect for the community.
-
Dogs must be kept on a leash in public spaces, unless in designated off-leash areas.
-
Pet waste must be picked up immediately. Failure to do so can result in fines up to €1,500. Always carry bags — we’ve included eco-friendly ones in your box.
-
Dogs must wear a collar with an ID tag that includes the owner’s contact information.
-
Bring a Bottle of Water (new in 2024). Barcelona law now requires all dog owners to carry water to rinse areas where their dog urinates. Fines up to €750 may apply if you’re unprepared — a small water bottle in your PawBox goes a long way!
-
Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date and bring documentation when travelling.
-
All dogs must be microchipped and registered in their home municipality, including foreign visitors if staying long-term.
-
Dogs in shops and cafés: Many smaller places are fine with it, but ask first.
-
In Barcelona, as in the rest of Spain, specific laws regulate the ownership of dogs classified as "Potentially Dangerous Dogs". The following breeds, along with their crossbreeds, are designated as potentially dangerous: Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu and Akita Inu. In these cases,
-
make sure to wear an approved muzzle,
-
be on a non-extendable leash no longer than 2 meters,
-
be handled by one person at a time; multiple "Potentially Dangerous Dogs" cannot be walked simultaneously by a single individual.
-
