Discover Canary Islands with PawBox

A collection of sun‑kissed volcanic islands off Africa’s northwest coast, the Canary Islands, especially Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, are increasingly embracing pet tourism. With dog‑friendly beaches, beautiful trails, ferry access, and top kennel and vet services, they offer a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation for pets and owners alike.

🏛️ Local Laws & Pet Etiquette in the Canary Islands:

  • Microchipping & registration: Mandatory for dogs, cats, ferrets; failure to comply can result in €10,000–€50,000 fines.

  • Rabies vaccination: Mandatory in all of Spain, including the Canary Islands. Your dog must have a current rabies vaccine (at least 21 days before arrival if coming from abroad). Puppies must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of vaccination. Proof of vaccination (in the EU Pet Passport or official veterinary certificate) is required. Failure to have your dog vaccinated is considered a minor offense, punishable by fines ranging from €500 to €10,000

  • Waste cleanup: In places like Arona (Tenerife), failing to pick up dog feces or urine can lead to fines of €500–€10,000.

  • Leaving tied dogs unattended: Under Spain’s new Animal Welfare Law, tying your dog outside a shop can lead to fines ranging from €500 to €200,000, depending on severity.

  • Leash & muzzle rules: Dogs must be leashed in public, and PPP breeds require muzzles. Fines vary by island.

  • Spain classifies certain breeds as Perros Potencialmente Peligrosos (PPP), which include: Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu, (and their crosses).  For these breeds and their crosses:

    • Must always wear a muzzle in public spaces.

    • Must always be on a leash no longer than 1 meter, and one person cannot walk more than one PPP dog at a time.

    • Owner must carry a valid PPP license and insurance (€120,000–€150,000 liability coverage minimum).

    • The dog must also be registered as PPP in the municipal registry.

    • Failure to comply with PPP regulations can result in fines ranging from €3,000 to €15,000, and the dog may even be seized if considered a public risk.

  • Liability insurance & training: Mandatory civil liability insurance, completion of owner course, and restrictions on pets being left alone. Fines of up to €10,000 for leaving dogs unattended >24 hours.

  • Dogs are allowed on inter-island ferries (check individual ferry operator policies).

  • Pets must be in a carrier or leashed with a muzzle on public buses.

  • Carry proof of vaccination (e.g., EU pet passport) when on ferries, visiting vets, or entering public spaces.

Adhering to these regulations helps you avoid significant fines and ensures a smooth, compliant visit with your pet. Beyond just the rules & fines, visitors to the Canary Islands with dogs should also be aware of local etiquette, which, while not “punishable,” helps you blend in and ensures a warm welcome:

✔️ Be respectful of non-dog areas: Not all beaches, restaurants, or parks allow dogs, and some that do have designated sections or hours. Always ask or look for posted signs.

✔️ Clean up after your dog: Locals take this very seriously, especially in towns & on beaches. Always carry bags and dispose of waste properly.

✔️ Be mindful of noise: Avoid letting your dog bark excessively in hotels, apartments, or on quiet beaches — locals value tranquility.

✔️ Don’t let your dog approach others without permission: Many people (and children) may be fearful or uncomfortable around dogs, even in dog-friendly spaces.

✔️ Keep dogs under control in rural/natural areas: In hiking areas or near farms, always keep your dog on a leash so they don’t disturb wildlife or livestock.

✔️ Be prepared at outdoor cafés & restaurants: Many terraces welcome dogs, but bring a mat or keep your dog under the table so they don’t block pathways.

🚗 Getting There & Getting Around

By Plane

  • The easiest way to reach the Canary Islands from mainland Spain or abroad is by air.

  • All islands have airports, with Tenerife and Gran Canaria offering the most frequent connections.

  • Airlines usually allow dogs in the cabin if under ~8 kg (including carrier), and in the hold for larger dogs (check each airline’s policy).

  • Carry the dog’s passport, vaccination record, and check the airline’s crate requirements.

By Ferry

  • Ferries depart from Cádiz or Huelva on mainland Spain and arrive in the Canaries after 1–2 days.

  • Ferries allow dogs, often with designated pet-friendly cabins or kennels.

  • Dogs must be leashed and sometimes muzzled in common areas.

Getting Around the Islands

  • On each island, renting a car is the best way to explore with a dog, as public transport often does not allow pets.

  • Taxis are usually accommodating if you ask first.

  • Some local buses (e.g., in Tenerife) allow small dogs in carriers, but policies vary. Always check before boarding.

  • Playa de Los Patos (La Orotava): More remote and rugged, this beach is dog-friendly and ideal for adventurous pups who enjoy exploring volcanic landscapes.

  • La Orotava Forest: Located on the northern slopes of Tenerife, this lush pine and laurel forest is a perfect escape from the heat of the beaches. Its shaded trails wind through cool, fragrant woods, making it ideal for dogs who don’t tolerate high temperatures. The paths vary in length and difficulty, so you can choose an easy stroll or a more adventurous hike. The peaceful atmosphere, bird songs, and fresh mountain air make it a favorite among local dog walkers. Keep your dog on a leash to avoid disturbing wildlife.

  • Los Cristianos to Las Américas Promenade: For a more urban but equally enjoyable outing, the long seafront promenade connecting Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas is a fantastic option. This flat, paved walkway runs alongside the ocean, offering constant sea breezes, plenty of people-watching, and opportunities to stop at dog-friendly cafés or ice cream stands along the way.
